my cousin has just bought himslef a 1000 point ork army and i can't for the life of me get enough fire power to take em down

A list of the models that he has would help.
Other than that: heavy bolters - lots of them. Devastator squads with quad heavy bolters. Heavy bolter mortis. Etc.

Knowing what he has will be useful but for general killing I find the following things very helpful.
Librarian (jump pack or bike) hellfire is the main attraction. The random strength will average 5 but can go much higher. Ok so it can also go lower but we're talking averages here. The point is a high strength flamer can kill a hell of a lot of boys very quickly. A good last line of defence. Alternative is a chaplain (again with jump pack), leading an assault or veteran squad on the charge they can break even a very big mob through the huge number of kills they can rack up. Heavy bolters are good as are assault cannons (although these are very pricey) and an autocannon predator will give a good cheap hail of shots to whittle down those mobs. Missiles are excellent due to their multiple roles. Reliable agains the low armour of most ork vehicles and able to instant death nobs and frags can hit many, many boys if he's using masses of boys. Use combat squads. Stall and counter tactics are the real key to wiping out an army that outnumbers you. By moving into rapid-fire range you make the best use of your bolters but that will also mean getting charged. So if he hasn't used the waaagh! so could get the jump on you send forward a squad to block his advance to your main line. It'll give a you a decent rapid-fire to whittle him down a little and his charge will only kill that small unit. You'll then be in position to counter-charge and shoot him in return. (He'll also likely be packed together to make blasts and templates very effective.) If you have more control over the distance and charges then move a couple of squads up one to rapid-fire and the other to pistol shoot and assault. (Although pistols and charging will provide more attacks overall this will reap slightly better averages as the shots hit on a 3+ and ignore his saves. |

he got the army from the new 40k box set and added a couple of boys and another warboss to make up the rest of the points
