It seems to me that the book is one of parallels. The author uses Astellan's narative as a device to show Boreas the current state of the Chapter, and where it is headed.

I surmise that it was primarily Slaanesh and his minions. The Brothers were deceived and led astray. Khorne would have slaughtered the population, Nurgle would have diseased them, Tzeentch would have made many of them pyskers or such. In the Angels of Darkness, an additional layer of fluff was given over to the Fallen Angels. In that, the Angels tend to fall into different sub-sects based upon how far they fell.
